BIOGRAPHY
Peter Markus Jentes (b. 1976) is a Manila based contemporary abstract artist whose work revolves around the tension between control and vulnerability. Working with layered fields of color, precise bands, and recurring horizon lines, he stages encounters between hard edged geometry and unruly, emotive mark making. Clean lines, flat planes, and measured grids collide with stains, drips, erasures, and distressed surfaces, creating quiet but insistent frictions across the canvas.
Jentes earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where he studied painting, drawing, sculpture, and art history. Grounded in this formal training, along with his background in design and advertising, he treats structure as both anchor and antagonist. Acrylic, spray paint, paper, coffee, pencil, and ink are built up in successive layers, then interrupted, sanded back, or partially obscured. What first appears minimal and ordered gradually reveals traces of doubt, revision, and reconsideration, evidence of an ongoing negotiation between intention and accident.
A central motif in his recent work is the horizon line, shifting from crisp to blurred, singular to multiplied. It functions as boundary and bridge, separating calm from turmoil, order from chaos, yet allowing them to bleed into one another. Within these bands and planes, suggestions of landscape, architecture, and organized chaos surface and recede, evoking spaces that feel both constructed and eroded over time.
Engaging with legacies of geometric and color field abstraction, and informed by artists such as Mark Rothko, Fernando Zóbel, Frank Stella, and Arturo Luz, Jentes pushes his language toward a more introspective and emotionally charged register. His paintings are less about perfect resolution than about holding fracture and calm in fragile equilibrium. Through this evolving practice, he invites viewers to stand at their own horizon and to consider how opposing states, precision and flux, certainty and doubt, can inhabit the same visual field.
